When it comes to child gas masks and personal protective equipment, nothing is as unique, innovative or practical as the MIRA CM-3M Child Escape Respirator. It should come as no surprise that children have substantially less lung capacity than the average adult due to their smaller size. Because of this, they can struggle to draw enough air through the complex filters used in today’s gas respirators (not to mention the difficulty getting a snug fit on a child with standard, adult-sized respirators).

Even if a child is large enough to use a full-sized respirator with relative comfort, difficulty breathing will cause issues over time. They may fatigue more easily, become distracted, or worse.

BELOW ARE SOME QUESTIONS ASKED OF MIRA AND THE RESPONSES MIRA PROVIDED. 

• What particulates/ chemicals does this protect against and can it be used more than once?

  This child escape respirator is rated to block mustard gas, which is the standard used for testing CBRN respirators and hoods. Beyond that, it depends on the filter you use. If you use a ParticleMax P3 filter, it will only block particles. If you use an NBC-77 SOF filter, it will block particulates, plus CBRN agents. With the VK-450 filter, it will block CBRN threats and oxidize carbon monoxide for fire escape purposes.

• • What is the run time? I.e. what is the distinction between the battery and NBC filter use time? Say I needed this for 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, what would my batter and filter rate use be? Can the device be turned off once activated to conserve either?

    A set of four CR123 batteries will last about 8 hours with continuous use. The time the filter will last depends on a few factors, including the contaminant type, concentration, breathing rate, along with atmospheric conditions. Generally speaking, a filter should last a full day under normal use conditions. If you are in an environment with very high concentrations of contaminants, use time will be reduced. I would suggest looking at the technical specs of the NBC-77 SOF Filter for an exact answer. The CM-3M Kids Gas Respirator can be turned on or off, as needed.

  • • Can this system be used for a 10 or 12-month-old baby as well? If not, do you guys have other systems available for babies?

      This mask is suitable for children as young as 2 up to and including small teens. It also fits children as young as a few months old, but due to the risk of them removing it, we only recommend it for ages 2+. Unfortunately, we currently don't have any products for infants or babies.

    • • Can you change the filter? Which filter is that if so? Also, it is mentioned that the product was tested and shown to provide protection for 240 minutes...is that based on one filter?

        Yes, the filter can be swapped with any 40mm NATO threaded filter. That specification is based on the single Israeli NBC filter that this unit comes with. 

      • Is the hood reusable for daily kid's school? How long can we use the filter that is included? How to disinfect the hood and other parts? How heavy is it? I am going to buy it for a 4-year-old.

        Yes, this system is reusable. If you are using this for viral threats, you can use a ParticleMax P3 filter instead of an NBC/CBRN filter, as it would be more cost-effective. For safety, we recommend using one filter per day, as you can decontaminate the outside housing of a filter cartridge, but not the inside (where the filtration paper is). this system will run for around eight continuous hours with one set of four CR123A batteries. Disinfection depends on the threat. If the threat is viral, we recommend using Allegro respirator wipes, or their cleaning solution. The blower weighs 1.8lb with the filter installed and can be attached via a back harness, or an included belt clip. The respirator itself weighs 1.4lb.

      • Did you know if this respirator can be used on airplanes? Does AirPort security allow their use?

        We have had customers fly with this product, without issue. I would check with the specific airline you're planning on using, as rules may differ.

      • • MIRA Safety CM-3M Child Escape Respirator vs. MD-1 Child Gas Respirator info, please? It looks like a plastic bag so wondering whether it will protect as good as MD-1 Child Gas Respirator.

          The CM-3M uses a PAPR (powered air-purifying respirator) system that works under positive pressure. There is a constant flow of air going into the respirator, which dramatically lowers breathing resistance and makes it easier to use for children. The MD-1, on the other hand, works like a standard negative pressure gas respirator. The child would have to use their lung power to suck air through the filter. We only suggest the MD-1 as a budget-friendly option if the child has the lung capacity to blow up a balloon. If not, we recommend going with the CM-3M as an alternative. Overall the CM-3M is a superior product as it lowers breathing resistance, has a wider field of view, comes with a hydration system, and the blower can also be used with all of our adult respirators once the child outgrows the respirator. Please keep in mind, you can use a PAPR system with the MD-1 as well, although the MD-1 does not come with it as a standard accessory.
